This article portrays the rehabilitation and structural strengthening process that the building located in Bucharest on 55 Lipscani Street recently went through. The building positioned in the city’s old centre is currently let to the Cărturești-Carusel bookstore and enjoys a strong public exposure. While strengthening the construction, its architectural style and details had to be preserved. At the same time, the monument’s area had to be extended by enlarging the basement and its former loft. The construction was seismically secured by retrofitting the structure with reinforced concrete portal frames, along with the introduction of a new raft foundation. During the rehabilitation process it was of high importance that the seismically vulnerable neighbouring buildings were stable and protected, especially that their foudations are in a crumbling state.
